PACT, Inc. Chronographs and Sky Screen Systems – General Troubleshooting
PACT, Inc. has been designing chronographs for years. This article covers common issues, troubleshooting steps, and support options for both current and legacy chronographs. Whether you’re dealing with a newer model or an older unit, we’re here to help.
General Troubleshooting:
- Low or Inaccurate Readings
- Battery Check: Replace the 9V battery with a fresh, recently purchased one. Even stored batteries lose charge over time, which can affect accuracy.
- Next Steps: If the battery doesn’t resolve the issue, it could be a sensor or internal problem. See “Repair and Trade-In Options” below.
- No Start Signal (Not Reading Shots)
- Battery Check: Start with a new, fully charged 9V battery, as a weak battery can prevent shot detection.
- Cable Inspection: Check the sensor cables for wear or loose connections. Wiggle them near the ends to find a “sweet spot.” If faulty, replacement sensors may be needed (e.g., Sky Screen Arms Replacement Kit for legacy systems).
- Internal Issue: If the battery and cables are fine, the problem might be the chronograph’s circuit board. Newer models may qualify for repair; older ones may need a trade-in (see below).
- Adjusting Screen Separation
- Process: To edit the Sky Screen separation:
- Ensure the unit is in Chronograph Mode.
- Press the “SET” key, enter the separation in inches (e.g., 18 for 18 inches), then press “SET” again to save.
- Process: To edit the Sky Screen separation:
- Software and Compatibility (Shot Browser)
- Compatibility: The Shot Browser software is dated but works on Windows (XP and newer) in “Compatibility Mode.” Download it here: https://pact.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/ShotBrowser.zip.
- Setup Guide: See this video for help: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TUAx2QIps6c.
- Upgrades: No software upgrades are available for chronographs.
- Powering IR Sensors
- IR vs. Standard Sensors: Infrared (IR) Sensors work in darkness using their own light but can be overwhelmed by sunlight outdoors—monitor lighting conditions. Without power, IR Sensors function like standard sensors.
- Portable Power Options: IR Sensors require a power source. Examples include:
- Jackery Portable Power Station (~$139.90 on Amazon) with a standard plug.
- Anker Portable Charger (~$42.97) + Power Cord to USB ~$8.99
- IR vs. Standard Sensors: Infrared (IR) Sensors work in darkness using their own light but can be overwhelmed by sunlight outdoors—monitor lighting conditions. Without power, IR Sensors function like standard sensors.
Sky Screen Systems – Legacy Notes:
Older chronographs use legacy Sky Screen Systems. If damaged (e.g., shot), replacement black plastic arms are available but may need slight modification for fit.
